Canals key to flooding risk

Sir, Happy New Year with a bit of good news for Rotherham and Sheffield.

I have worked using the canals for 25 years and gained a lot of experience with water levels.

It is my opinion that by draining the canals on the threat of floods which in turn will reduce the levels of the River Rother and the River Don, any flooding will be nominal.

This will also stop any floods at Meadowhall. The only reason this has not yet been done is the embarrasment of the British Waterways as this will expose the debris and chemicals on the canal bed.

It may take a few more million pounds worth of damage or another flood at Meadowhall before the councils put pressure on the British Waterways Board but when they do this, it will be good news for Rotherham and Sheffield.
