Call for council leader to spell out council costs

Sir, I read with great interest the open letter from Roger Stone. He sounded sincere and yet it did make me wonder if the practical reality of protecting frontline services was actually true.

I would like Roger Stone to be more specific about where the money is going. How much is spent by the council in running the council?

For example we have 69 councillors for the borough costing just under £1m - do we really need so many?

Swinton, with a population of at most 15,000, has 3 councillors. We cannot afford such luxury, this is were the cost cutting should start! What cut has been made/proposed to reduce the cost of council administration?

Surely a tier of middle managers could be lost? Please remember Rotherham members are paid more than Sheffield and the leader there has taken a pay cut!

How much is spent on ad hoc projects (the crazy Dolly Parton reading scheme comes to mind)? How much is spent on catering to minority groups whilst the majority suffer cuts?

If cuts are to be made it has to be fairly across the board. It is time to think outside the box and put the people of Rotherham first.

Pat Collins, address supplied.
