Appalling ignorance over work of teachers

Sir —I am writing in response to a letter from Richard Cook (Advertiser, Feb 4). If anyone should wake up and smell the coffee, then it's you.

As a busy teacher, I have to object to your appalling ignorance with regard to the work that teachers do.

Personally, I rarely work less than a 12 hour day over 4 days, (I give myself Friday evening off), with about 8 hours over a weekend this amounts to about a 56 hour week.

If you multiply this by 39 weeks worked the answer is 2184 hours worked in a year.

Divide this by an average 45-week year that most people work, then I work on average the same or more hours per year than most other jobs. This does not take into account the work done during so called holidays.

How dare you imply that teachers are parasitic leeches. Most teachers are dedicated hard working professionals, who deserve the same consideration as other professionals. I would love to see you and other ignorant people do the job that we do.
