Busy weekend as crews tackle recycling centre blaze and two car fires

FIREFIGHTERS spent four hours tackling two piles of waste on fire at a recycling site.

Five fire engines and one turntable ladder vehicle attended to deal with the blaze at the premises on Ginhouse Lane, Thornhill, after a call was received at 7.43pm on Friday.

Two jets were used to extinguish the fire, with crews leaving the site at 11.44pm.

A spokesperson for South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue said a re-inspection was carried out the next day at 9am “to ensure the incident had been completely dealt with”. 

On Saturday afternoon, a crew from Rotherham were called to an accidental vehicle fire on a roundabout near College Road, Rotherham at 12.49pm. 

Firefighters used a hose reel and dry powder to extinguish the car which was said to be “well alight” and came away an hour later. 

A crew from Maltby later attended a car fire caused by a road traffic collision on Bawtry Road, Hellaby, at 3.10pm.

The SYFR spokesperson said: “The engine bay had been on fire and a passer-by had used a dry powder extinguisher to partly extinguish it.” 

Firefighters used a hose reel to fully extinguish the fire and ensured the battery for the vehicle was disconnected, leaving the scene at approximately 3.27pm.
