SURGERY TIMES: Cllr John Turner, who represents the Hellaby ward on Rotherham Council, holds a surgery at Wickersley Library and Community Centre, Bawtry Road, on the first Tuesday of each month 5.30-6.30pm.

STARS@LAST: Rehearsals are under way and Wickersley talent will feature strongly in the STARS@LAST Variety Show at Rotherham Civic Theatre on November 6. This year’s fundraising show in support of SAFE@LAST children’s charity will have professional acts supported by talent from the area. Wickersley Musical Theatre Company will perform well-known numbers from their next show Hairspray whilst Wickersley Comprehensive School drama students Olivia Valantine-Fowkes, Harry Saxton and Leo Rowley present a comedy sketch. Gillian Banks students from Wickersley and Maltby appear in an extract from The Lion King. STARS@LAST is sponsored by RMBC and B&B Press. ST ALBAN’S CHURCH: Harvest festival will be celebrated on October 4 with a family service 10.30am. The congregation is invited to bring in gifts of non-perishable foods to be distributed to the elderly and housebound of the parish, and also to the Rotherham Foodbank. The Harvest Songs of Praise service is on October 11 6pm.

 

ROTHER VALLEY RETIRED TEACHERS: The September meeting was led by chairman Margaret Kettleborough. Photographs taken at the 50th anniversary dinner in May are available for members to purchase. There are still places available for the visit to Castle Howard on November 26, contact Ann Pickering at the October meeting. Dr Murray Wilson spoke about What They Didn’t Tell You at Medical School. The monthly raffle prize winners were Doreen Baker, David Guest, Gwen Smith, and Shirley Cutts. The next meeting is on October 8 when Dr Clark will talk about The Silk Road. 

 

WICKERSLEY CI BOWLING CLUB: The club held its Ladies Singles Trophy competition on September 20. Thirteen members took part, and these were split into two groups with each member playing each other in their group for eight ends. The winner of each group then played in the final. Shirley Hitchings played Pat Burton for 10 ends and won by seven points to six. The next club competition will be the Turkey Trot, a mixed doubles competition, on Sunday. This will be the last competition of the season.

WICKERSLEY METHODIST WIVES GROUP: September 21 – the group held its AGM when outgoing president Mrs Gill Cuthbert chaired the meeting in the absence of Rev Joyce Barrass. There were 15 members present. Gill Cuthbert gave the president’s report and said it had been her privilege to have been president during the 50th anniversary year. Treasurer Mrs Anita Taylor gave her report indicating that the group had raised less in the last year owing to fewer members and only meeting every two weeks during the winter months. However, efforts during the year had raised a total of £800 to be distributed as Rotherham Hospice £400 and Wickersley Methodist Church £400. The date of the presentation service will be October 26 7.30pm in the church coffee lounge. It was put forward to members that meetings are every two weeks commencing in October and not just during the winter months. This was agreed. Officials elected for 2015/16 – president Mrs Margaret Baldry, vice president Mrs Marjorie Mottershaw, secretary Mrs Irene Hartley, social secretary Mrs Margaret Baldry, treasurer Mrs Anita Taylor, assistant treasurer Mrs Anne Hampshire, committee Mrs Gill Cuthbert, Mrs Freda McNally, Mrs Helen Thickitt. Next week there is a visit arranged to Pastures Moo Ice Cream Parlour in Wath to see the process of ice cream making.
