WICKERSLEY METHODIST WIVES GROUP: The group held its annual Burn’s Night supper on February 1 organised by the two scots in the group, Ann Ashton and Irene Hartley. However, the evening was tinged with sadness when president Mrs Margaret Baldry announced that committee member and former president Gill Cuthbert had died on January 24. Tables were sent out with tartan cloths, serviettes and red roses. A meal of Scotch Broth, Scottish smokes fish pate and oatcakes, haggis, needs and chappit tatties was served, followed by raspberry cranachan and Scotch trifle. Secretary Irene Hartley said the Selkirk Grace, the Toast to the Lasses was given by Ann Ashton and the reply was given by vice-president Marjorie Mottershaw. Scottish music was played. There was a raffle with ten prizes and the evening raised £116 for Wives Group funds. On February 8 the speaker will be Mrs Girdlestone who will talk and demonstrate the art of quilting and about how she raises funds for terminally ill children.

SURGERY TIMES: Cllr John Turner, who represents the Hellaby ward on Rotherham Council, holds a surgery at Wickersley Library and Community Centre, Bawtry Road, on the first Tuesday of each month 5.30-6.30pm.

 

COUNCILLOR SURGERY TIMES: The three ward councillors for the Wickersley ward – Sue Ellis, Emma Hoddinott and Chris Read – normally hold four local advice surgeries each month. These are private meetings between councillors and local residents. First Saturday of month 10-11am at Wickersley Library and Community Centre, second Friday of month 6-7pm at Bramley Parish Hall, third Tuesday of month 9.30-10.30am at Mark Grove Community Centre, fourth Monday of month 6-7pm at Sunnyside Community Centre. www.wickersleyward.org.uk 

 

WICKERSLEY TOWNSWOMEN’S GUILD: The first meeting of the year was held on January 28 in the Barn, Wickersley. Chairman Sheila Damms said the Christmas carol services had been successful and reminded members of the annual lunch on April 19 at Carlton Park. Arrangements for the national AGM at Bournemouth are in place and dates for final payments were announced. Pat Rowbotham said a social evening and pea and pie supper was planned at Silverwood Miners Welfare on August 10, this in place of the previous annual Drama Festival. Details of future outings, arranged by Bramley Guild, were also read out. The Book Club’s next meeting is on February 23 at the Tabard. The next guild meeting is on February 25 when the speaker will be local author Felicity Wright whose talk is entitled Publishing and Writing Books.

 

ST ALBAN’S CHURCH: The SAM group is holding its annual dinner on February 9 at the Seven Seas Restaurant on Bawtry Road, Wickersley. Lent begins on February 10, and there will be an evening Communion service on Ash Wednesday (February 10) in church. Lent lunches begin on February 11 at Blessed Trinity Church on Northfield Lane noon-1.15pm. Bread, cheese, scones and drinks are served every Thursday during Lent, with proceeds going to Christian Aid. A Lent course, entitled Exploring the Creeds, will begin in St Alban’s Church on February 15 7.15pm. The Lent Study Group will be following Bishop Steven Croft’s book Pilgrim: A Course for the Christian Journey. Meetings will continue on Mondays for six weeks.

WICKERSLEY PROBUS CLUB: At the meeting on January 29, speaker Keith Watlin gave a talk on English Architecture. This was the second of his two talks on the subject. The next meeting will be held at the Barn today 2.15pm when the speaker will be Mr M Thacker on Taiwan.
