RSPB OLD MOOR: for the past five years there has only been one female Bittern on the site, but recently two Bittern nests have been discovered. The Bittern, which is a relative of the Heron, was classed as extinct in the late 19th century, but the RSPB site has been taking part in a nationwide programme to help bring them back from the brink of extinction. The bird is reliant on reedbeds and staff at the site are pleased to see that the conditions they have been providing are exactly the right habitat for them. The reedbed path has been closed to stop any disturbance of their nests but excellent views are possible from viewpoints around the site. If you go along and want to see them, ask staff and volunteers who will be glad to help people spot them. the Old Moor site can be contacted on 01226 751593 or by email [email protected]
