MALTBY LOCAL HISTORY SOCIETY: Maltby St Mary Magdalene Church and the Roman Catholic community in Maltby were the topics of the society’s meeting at Maltby Library on January 21. It was led by Eileen Kent with the support of a group of members of the congregation who represented the church’s founding families. These were of Irish descent whose menfolk came to Maltby, over a century ago, to work at the newly opened colliery. Family stories were shared of the community’s early walks to church in Oldcotes and of the use of borrowed buildings, including Gough’s Café, for the celebration of Mass. The meeting was shown photographs of the first pre-fabricated church, of the priests who came to serve the growing community and of major community events. The society’s next meeting is on February 18 when the subject will be Wellgate: The Story of a Rotherham Street by speaker Margaret Jackson. Contact 01709/812035.

Round One involved them completing a one hour multiple choice paper (taken online) under staff supervised exam conditions. The British Biology Olympiad is open to students around the world. The aim is to stimulate students with an interest in Biology to expand their talents. It enables students to demonstrate their knowledge and to be suitably rewarded and publicly recognised by the award of medals, certificates and other prizes. All Y13 biologists and half of the Y12 class are taking part. The Under 13s Basketball team has performed well at the English Institute of Sport in Sheffield. They took part in a five team tournament in which they finished in second place. The team, made up of Y7-9 students, played well as a team.
