Olympics-inspired games come to Wickersley

TEENAGE sports fans who were inspired by the London Olympics organised their own summer games.

About 30 children aged between five and ten took part in various events at Wickersley School.

The day was set up by a group of 16-year-olds — calling themselves Rother’s Champions Squad — as part of their National Citizen Service summer work.

The competing youngsters were divided into four teams and contested a series of relays before a hard-fought football tournament.

Chantelle Hubbard, from the organising group, said: “The Ready Steady Sport games have proved very popular.

“It gave us valuable experience at organising an event and the children a day to remember.”

Rotherham United Community Sports Trust helped put on the games, which was sponsored by Parkgate Shopping. A celebration event is being organised.

NCS gives young people the opportunity to get ahead by learning new skills which are valued by employers and colleges.
