Museum gears up for fund-raising events this weekend

VILLAGERS are praying for sunshine as they prepare their strawberries, cakes and scones for an annual fund-raising day this weekend.

This Sunday has been declared the 2013 Charity Sunday for Darfield Museum, with the Child Bereavement Support Group at Barnsley Hospice set to benefit from the money raised.

Geoffrey Hutchinson from Darfield Area Amenity Society said: “In times gone by, this was the day when for many years the Darfield Hospital Sing would be held.

“This event generated money through the singing of hymns, but gradually became less and less popular.

“It was therefore changed some years ago into the Charity Sunday Event — a day for raising money for a medically related cause usually based around strawberries and sunshine.

“We hope that the sun will shine so that the patio of the museum can be used with the traditional strawberries and other goodies very much in evidence.

“All the baking of scones and cakes is done by volunteers from the Amenity Society.”

The proceeds will be presented to the hospice at the society’s annual art and craft exhibition, which takes place at Darfield Church Hall on August 24 and 25.
