Hunt for Rotherham's secret attractions

ROTHERHAM folk are being urged to nominate the town’s “hidden gems” under a new scheme launched by rail firm Northern Rail.

Small shops, pubs, restaurants, attractions, journeys and hotels across the country can be nominated as part of a hunt for the UK’s lesser-known destinations.

Ian Bevan, Northern Rail’s managing director, said: “There are hundreds—if not thousands—of great pubs, restaurants, attractions, museums, walks, views and even journeys out in the countryside which are largely undiscovered but all within easy reach of many people.”

The Federation of Small Businesses is also backing the Hidden Gems scheme.

Its chairman, John Walker, said: “Small, independent businesses are the engine room of the UK economy and it's vital, particularly at present when we are all facing uncertain and tough conditions, that they are given all the help and support possible.”

Those who manage to be chosen among the Best in the North will go up against the favourite hidden gems from other regions and the overall winners will appear on posters across the Northern Rail network.

Mr Bevan said: “We want to find out about the very best of what’s out there across our network so we can shout about it and let people know.

“Hidden Gems not only highlights the very best, but also helps to support communities and businesses.”
