History centre set to open this week

A CENTRE for local and family history buffs will officially open on Friday (4).

Mexborough and District Heritage Centre, within the town’s library, will be launched at 1.30pm.

It will be managed by Mexborough and District Heritage Society and children from Doncaster Road Junior School have been involved in the preparations.

Society research manager Julia Ashby said: “Children are the future of local history, so rather than have a member of the aristocracy or dignitary open the centre, we decided it should be opened by a local child.

“Norman Watson, the late president of the society, attended Doncaster Road and his aunt taught there, so we thought it most appropriate that a young person from this school should perform the ceremony.

“Over the last few weeks, pupils have been taking part in an arts project on the subject of Mexborough history and the winner will take this role.”

The opening ceremony will be followed by a week-long exhibition depicting a number of topics including the canals, barges, Montagu Hospital and famous people.

Visitors will also be able to look though hundreds of photographs and the centre will be open to anyone wishing to research anything from the society’s vast local and family history archives.

The centre will be open from 3pm to 5pm on Mondays and Thursdays and 11am to 4pm on Fridays. Saturday sessions can be made through prior arrangement.
