Fitness sessions branching out

A SUCCESSFUL scheme to help older people keep fit is being expanded to other areas.

Following the success of several Fit for the Future groups, Age UK Rotherham is launching the project into other parts of the town.

Fit for the Future aims to help older people in Rotherham keep more mentally, physically and socially active by taking part in activities in sessions run by the community, for the community.

Four launch events are taking place this month at community venues in Bramley, Kiveton Park, Rockingham and Kilnhurst.

The events are an opportunity to find out more about the project and the groups already running as well as the groups being set up later in the year.  Those attending will be able to try out some of the activities on offer such as boccia, new age kurling, crafts and quizzes.

Lesley Dabell, chief executive of Age UK Rotherham, said: “By joining one of these groups older people will be able to get more active and involved in things that stimulate them mentally and keep them moving physically.

“As well as this, being part of a group can also prevent loneliness, which is one of the biggest problems facing older people today.”

Refreshments will be available as well as soup and a roll for those who have pre-registered for the event.
