Feeling creative? Join the club

CREATIVE writers of all kinds are being invited to join a literary group in the Dearne Valley.

People with an interest in writing novels, poems, scripts or short stories are being urged to get in touch.

Poet, novelist, biographer and creative writing teacher Steve Ely has set up Write On Mexborough! which aims to develop creative writing talent.

The group will meet every second Wednesday from 7pm to 9pm at Mexborough Resource Centre on Dolcliffe Road, with the first session taking place on Wednesday, September 28.

There will be 15 sessions in total during which participants will develop their creative skills by working on a project such as a play or sequence of poems through masterclasses with invited authors, performances and workshop sessions.

The course will culminate in a performance of the group’s work.

Anyone interested in taking part can email Mr Ely at [email protected] by Friday, September 9 including information about their name, address (including postcode) and telephone contact number, a paragraph about their writing experience and ambitions and a paragraph or so about the project they would like to work on over the 15 sessions.

There is no cost for joining Write On Mexborough! but membership will be limited to 14 participants. If the course is oversubscribed, it is hoped further funding can be found to run a second group.

Mr Ely teaches creative writing at Huddersfield University, the Poetry School, in secondary schools and with community groups. He is the chair of the Ted Hughes Project (South Yorkshire) and the director of the Ted Hughes Network at the University of Huddersfield.

On Wednesday, September 14, there will be the official launch of a poetry and short fiction pamphlet written by participants in the last Write on Mexborough! course.

This will take place at the Concertina Band Club on Dolcliffe Road, Mexborough, from 8pm and will include readings and performances.
