Carnival time at the Winter Green pub

A PUB is out to bring the carnival spirit to a new housing estate to build community links through dance and celebration.

The Winter Green pub at Waverley is turning its car park into a beach and holding a day-long fiesta to mark its second birthday on July 9.

Landlady Emma Thompson said a big party at the pub would follow a carnival-style procession through the under-construction housing estate, which is already home to scores of families.

There will be Brazilian dancing displays by Year 11 performing acts students from Brinsworth Academy, seaside activities, children’s entertainer, limbo dancing, a zumbathon, rodeo, coconut shy and fun fair.

Evening entertainment takes the shape of a Dream Girls show by members of Rotherham’s Gillian Banks Theatre School at about 6pm and a peformance by local band The Magnetics.

Emma said: “We had a birthday party last year but this year we wanted to go bigger and better.

“It’s about creating a community spirit among the people who have come to live here and letting everyone know there is a new village here.”

The Waverley estate is being built on the site of the former Orgreave open-cast site by housebuilders Barratt, Taylor Wimpey and Harron Homes, who have all chipped in to cover the cost of the celebrations.

“We’re going to be getting ready the day before — I think something like 100 tonnes of sand is being delivered — and the fun fun starts with the carnival procession at 11.30am,” said Emma.

“It will go on until 11 o’clock at night, and it’s open to everyone, whether they live at Waverley or not.”
