The popular Get Doncaster Walking Festival was officially opened last weekend by the wounded ex-serviceman with a walk around the lake at Doncaster’s Lakeside business and retail park.

The festival runs until May and the Dearne Valley trails include a Sprotbrough Viaducts and Ghosts of the Past walk on Saturday, January 31.

The five-mile walk, led by Doncaster Ramblers, begins at 10.30am and those taking part should meet the Boat Inn on Nursery Lane in Lower Sprotbrough.

It is described as an easy walk along both banks of the River Don

taking in the impressive Victorian viaduct, passing long-gone hamlets where boats were once built.
