Gambling centre plan for former Rotherham town centre bookshop

PLANS have been submitted for a 24-hour gambling centre in the Rotherham town centre unit formerly home to The Works.

Proposals were submitted for a nail bar in May following the bookshop chain’s closure of its Effingham Street shop.

Now applicant Mr P Chambers has asked to convert the unit – next door but one to the Admiral casino – into a gaming centre.

Planning papers filed with the application say: “The site was previously a retail unit, but was used sporadically for many years with no long-term tenant being secured.

“In an attempt to secure a long-term use for the site, planning consent was obtained in May 2023 for a change of use to a nail bar.

“Unfortunately, the nail bar use has also proved unviable.

"An opportunity has now arisen to secure a long-term occupier who wishes to operate an adult gaming centre.

“The proposed use is entirely compatible with the town centre function and will protect its vitality and viability.”
