A first European Tour title inched further within reach when he picked up a couple of shots early on but a triple bogey seven at the par four sixth hole forced him to settle for a level par 72 and joint seventh overall, eight shots behind winner Ross McGowan.

The result leaves Rotherham Golf Club pro Willett 55th in the Race to Dubai rankings, with the top 60 qualifying.

His earnings have now reached a staggering 497,000 euros since turning pro last year.

Willett is currently in action in the Portugal Masters in Villamoura, which started yesterday.
