And chairman Tony Stewart says it's great news not only for the club but also for the whole town — bringing an immediate cash boost of around £6 million into the AEESEAL New York Stadium coffers.

Rotherham beat Shrewsbury Town 2-1 on Sunday to wrap up an astonishing season, meaning they'll be taking on some of the biggest names in the game next season, while increased gates and visiting support is expected to have a big economic spin-off.

The team was welcomed home last night with an open-top bus parade through town and Mr Stewart, manager Paul Warne and the club board will now prepare for life in the ultra-tough second tier.

But the chairman says they'll head into the Championship ready for the challenge.

"It's great news for everyone," he said. "Who would have thought this would happen 12 months ago when we fell from grace.

"We will be able to compete in the Championship because we learned so much from the last time. Promotion means we'll have a lot more money to invest, it will be worth around £6 million in revenues and such as TV rights."
