Titans lose again despite battling display

TITANS put in a much improved performance to push promotion-chasing Jersey to the wire, coach Justin Burnell saying: “I thought we were the better team.”

They went down 17-9 but avoided dropping to the foot of the Championship after Richmond were beaten at home by London Scottish.

Rotherham made a good start and two Lee Millar penalties deservedly put them 6-0 ahead, albeit with the help of a blustery wind at St. Peter.

That’s how it stayed until the break but afterwards Jersey were a tougher proposition and went ahead when Simon Kerrod barged his way over with Callum Sheedy converting.

Burnell’s side hit back when Caolan Ryan kicked a third penalty only for the Jerseymen to nose back ahead almost immediately from Sheedy to make it 10-9.

A second home try from Nick Haining, Sheedy converting, wrapped it up and meant that Titans now have one win from 13 games.

That will increase the pressure on Burnell - but he was pleased with his team’s performance.

"I'm very disappointed to come away with nothing,” he said. “I thought we were the better side and it was just a couple of horrendous lineouts that let us down when we were otherwise dominant. The boys showed great spirit and should be proud of their display."
