Rotherham Boys in fold shock

THE axe has fallen on Rotherham Boys—leaving the town without a representative schools side for the first time.

Spiralling costs and the unwillingness of some schools to support the two teams financially led to the plug being pulled this week, leaving officials hugely disappointed.

Rotherham has run an U15 and U14 side for decades, producing players such as the Snodin brothers, Ian and Glynn, Matt hamshaw and current Millers Ryan Taylor and Ryan Cresswell.

The news follows the disbanding of the Rother Valley team two months ago, leaving the town without a junior school representative side.

Funding for the two teams has largely been met by Rotherham Council cash plus a levy on secondary schools—but with some having withdrawn their backing, it means cash had dried up, leaving officials with no option other than to throw in the towel.

Boys’ team manager Bob Cooper says it’s bad news for football in Rotherham.

“While representative football is still healthy we just can’t afford the cost of playing,” he said.
