Defeat to Fulham today finally sent the Millers down to League One with seven games to go, their 30th Championship defeat finally tipping them over the edge.

Despite only stepping up from fitness coach to take over in December, Warne said he had to accept responsibility for what had happened.

“I haven’t been good enough to keep us up, which is on my head. The performances have been quite good times, but not enough of them,” he said.

“Other people might have inherited similar situations and done better so I take that blame. Relegation is not a massive shock, more frustration.”

Warne said he still didn’t know what Wednesday’s club announcement about the future would be but was attracted to the idea of staying on to lead the team in League One next term

“I feel I have been dealt a tricky hand but I have still been honoured and priveleged.  If I was was offered the job I don’t think I could turn it down,” he added.
