The athletic left-back has turned out 64 times for the Pilgrims since making his debut in 2013, notching 25 appearances this term.

Twenty-year-old Purrington came through the ranks at the Home Park outfit and has helped them into second position in the League Two table this season.

"The team needs to be rebuilt and I see young, athletic, enthusiastic kids as the way forward."

He reportedly attracted interest from Championship rivals Aston Villa in the summer and was one of Plymouth’s stand-out performers when the south coast outfit held Premier League Liverpool to a 0-0 draw in the FA Cup third round at Anfield earlier this month.

Boss Paul Warne said of his fourth January signing: “He's athletic, he gets up and down the pitch well, he's played a lot of games from a young age and he wants to come here.

"He's lived down in Dorset all his life so it's a big move for a young lad but as I said when I took on this caretaker role, I want to hand the team over to the next person in better fettle than I got it and young players like Ben will really add to it.

"If Joe Mattock keeps his levels up then it will be hard to dislodge him from left-back but I'm hoping Ben will be a good player for us not just this season but the seasons following.

Purrington has penned a three and a half year deal with the Millers and follows Richard O'Donnell, Alex Bray and Semi Ajayi through the door this month.
