Northerner Ashworth welcomes move

NEW signing Luke Ashworth is delighted to have been given a fresh start in the north by Rotherham United.

The central defender and former Young Player of the Year for Wigan Athletic has joined on a free transfer after failing to settle in London with Leyton Orient.

"I am delighted to be here and want to thank the manager for giving me a chance to move back closer to home," said Ashworth, who made only sporadic first team appearances for the London club.

"I am looking forward to meeting up with the lads for pre-season training and I'm optimistic about the season ahead."

Ashworth (20) has signed a one-year deal, with the option to extend his stay should he impress manager Ronnie Moore.

The Millers' chief operating officer, Paul Douglas, said: "Luke is a central defender who is good in the air but also comfortable in possession, and I know Ronnie feels he is a really bright prospect."
