MILLERS: Walsall officially reject approach for manager Smith

WALSALL have confirmed they have “categorically rejected” an approach - understood to be from Rotherham United - for manager Dean Smith.

In a statement this afternoon, the midlands club said: “In response to recent media speculation the club can confirm it received an approach from a Championship club for permission to speak to manager Dean Smith.

“This approach was categorically rejected.

“As one of the longest serving managers in the country, Dean has been instrumental in the club's progress since his appointment and is fundamental to our future plans.”

It is thought Rotherham chairman Tony Stewart was keen to speak with former Sheffield Wednesday defender Smith (44), who has guided the Saddlers to second in the League One table.

The Millers are on the hunt for a new boss after Steve Evans left the club last week and are expected to announce an appointment sometime in the next seven days.

Former Leeds United manager Neil Redfearn remains the favourite with bookies, with former favourite Alan Stubbs dropping off the pace.
