Paul Warne confirmed a good contract offer has been made to Tom Adeyemi, the midfield man who has netted seven goals in less than 30 games on loan from Cardiff.

The Millers chief also has several other irons in the fire which he hopes will turn into signings soon after next weekend’s final Championship match of the season against Derby.

“I’m well aware players can get a last minute twinge but I’d like to think the work we have done is enough to get people in,” he said ahead of today’s trip to Preston.

“The chairman has kindly let me make Tom a pretty impressive offer and if he doesn’t get something from the Championship then I think he will take it.”

Relegated Rotherham have lost 21 of their 22 away games and the clash at Deepdale is the last chance to put an away win on the board. One-time play-off challengers Preston have lost four four on the spin but having gone to watch their defeat at Newcastle earlier in the week, Warne is ready for a hard match and a possible change of  approach from the Lilywhites.

He told the Advertiser: “Preston have had a really good season and at Newcastle they were by far the better team in the first half. Paul Gallagher played in front of the back four and they kept the ball well and looked a really organised unit.

"They conceded just before half time and it was a different game second half and obviously Gallagher got sent off. He will be suspended for his one but with it being their last home game, I wouldn't be surprised if Preson mix it up again and change their system.

“We want to try and break the back of our away form. We’ll put our best team out and go toe to toe with them, that’s all we can do, but I am going to Preston hopeful and positive.”

Danny Ward: in-demand striker misses today's trip to Preston.

Warne will know this morning whether centre-half Semi Ajayi is fit enough to play. Anthony Forde misses out, as does top scorer Danny Ward who has been the subject of a substantial bid from a Championship club, with another poised to table an offer. Ward is aiming to be back for the Derby game.

Warne, meanwhile, won’t be pursuing his interest in the two triallists who featured in the reserves’ win over Mansfield in midweek.
