First week of cricket season scrapped

CRICKET officials have been forced to pull the plug on next week’s scheduled opening round of fixtures because of the spring washout.

Snow and heavy rain has left many grounds flooded and, even though conditions are expected to improve, it has meant that most clubs haven’t been able to work on their pitches in readiness for the start.

It means the opening day programme, a week tomorrow in the ECB Yorkshire League South and the South Yorkshire Senior League, has been shelved and those games will now be played on September 15, with the season having been extended by a week, apart from the SYSL Championship games, which will now take place on Bank Holiday Monday, May 7.
