Church dumped out in Trophy shock

DEFENDING Mick Savage Trophy champions Whiston Parish Church were dethroned by Division One side Darfield in a last-ball quarter final nailbiter at Churchfields.

Batting first, Premier outfit Whiston were in trouble at 42-2 only for opener Jason Larder to resurrent the innings with 90 in 105 balls.

They did benefit from a brief late flurry but with Chris Speed taking 4-28 and Ryan Wake adding 3-51, the hosts finished on 208 with three unused overs.

Darfield got off to a bright start with 78 for the first wicket and progressed to 188-4 before wickets tumbled to set up a dramatic finale as the winning runs came off the final ball. Dan Hitchen took 3-0.
