Goalkeeper Andy Warrington again excelled with a first-half penalty save from ex-Miller Dave Hibbert but was beaten by Fairhurst's 25-yard drive just before the interval.

Rotherham created few chances on the night, the best falling to Kevin Ellison, and they were finally beaten when Devitt's long-range effort took a wicked deflection off Ian Sharps two minutes from time.

Millers defender Mark Lynch said: "I didn't think there was much in it although we did lack a bit of spark and didn't get the ball in the box enough.

"We didn't create a great deal of chances but neither did they. They just had the luck at right times."

The Millers remain in the automatic promotion frame thanks to Dagenham's home defeat to Aldershot.

Burton Albion visit Don Valley Stadium on Saturday.
