Awards double for tennis club aces

THE Sheffield Winter League break hasn't halted the flow of success for Moorgate Tennis Club players — at both ends of the age spectrum.

Veteran Bob McIlvenny and teenager Daniel Hernandez-Black both took the honours at the Yorkshire Tennis Awards in Leeds, which was attended by the President of the LTA, Martin Corrie.

Bob was presented with his county colours, following a two year stint in the Yorkshire O70 team, which included success at national level.

Daniel took part in the Abbeydale Winter Open U14 Grade Four Tournament and recorded another tournament success to take the trophy home at the big awards night. Having dropped just a handful of games on his way to the final, he was taken all the way to a tie-break by opponent Luke Hoyland, before clinching a 10-5 victory.

Daniel then took part in the U16 event, again reaching the final for the loss of just four games before losing to the highly rated Matthew Abel.

But his performances in 2017 should see him climb the rankings when the next update is carried out in the spring.
