ANALYSIS: Moment of quality decides South Yorkshire derby

THE lesson from Rotherham United's 20th league defeat of the season was much the same as the previous 19.

Workrate, honesty and endeavour only gets you so far and is so often cancelled out by one dash of class.

While Barnsley didn't exactly deserve to win Saturday's South Yorkshire derby, the skill and pace in their ranks meant they always had a trick up their sleeve.

The quality of Ryan Kent's defence-splitting pass for their 70th minute winner was matched by Adam Armstrong's finish, that crucial blow struck by a player the Millers had chased last summer.

Barnsley went into the match a supposed club in crisis with Conor Hourihane and James Bree having scooted off to Aston Villa and Marley Watkins hankering for a move.

If that's a crisis they should cast a glance in Rotherham's direction, now 11 points shy of the Championship safety line and with a squad needing some urgent repair work before tomorrow night's transfer deadline.

For the second successive game, Paul Warne saw a player pull out injured at the 11th hour, this time Tom Adeyemi.

He should be back to play Nottingham Forest tomorrow night along with Joe Newell but fresh injuries for Aimen Belaid and Darnell Fisher mean the new defenders the interim manager has lined up may well be needed.

Even though Stephen Kelly was caught out for pace once or twice after replacing Belaid, the back four coped fairly well with a side whose attacking prowess has helped them have such a strong season. Armstrong's strike partner, Tom Bradshaw, did nothing to make Rotherham regret not paying big money for him last summer.

Although Armstrong clipped the bar in the first half and ex-Miller Aidy White pulled a shot across an open goal, the more eye-catching forward play was from the home side, clearly keen to avenge their 4-0 humiliation in the first meeting at Oakwell and seeing Joe Mattock kiss the outside of the post from distance.

Danny Ward returned to partner Jerry Yates up front in a 4-4-2 and had his best moment with a lovely dink that had goalkeeper Adam Davies scrambling. Rotherham will hope there's no more interest in their top scorer over the next 24 hour or so.

Despite the industry of Will Vaulks and Richie Smallwood in the middle of the park and the willingness of Jon Taylor to run at defenders, the mental fragility Warne has spoken about in the past seemed to resurface when Barnsley went ahead.

The Millers were never the same again after the goal, all their huffing and puffing fashioning only one clear chance, a header for Yates.

The finger tips of Richard O'Donnell prevented the rampaging Watkins making it 2-0 and there was a late run-out for Alex Bray, the loan signing from Swansea City, but the late drama was saved for after the final whistle when the discovery of a suspicious package caused the New York Stadium to be evacuated.
