Swimmers head for Olympic trials

SWIMMERS Becky Turner and Nick Grainger are one step away from next summer’s Olympics after booking their places in the trials.

Wickersley ace Becky has been tipped as a solid bet to make the squad in London, especially after a sensational freestyle swim at the recent World Championships in Shanghai when the GB team secured a sixth place finish in the 4x200m, which qualified the team for the Olympics.

That means that Becky will take her place in the Games if she finishes in the top six in the trials, which will be held at the new £268 million Olympic Aquatics Centre in London in March.

And 17-year-old Nick, from Swinton, has also earned a shot at the showpiece event after finishing a second inside the qualifying time in the 400m Individual Medley. He will also compete at the March trials.

Said their City of Sheffield coach Russ Barber: “Becky has a great chance of making it.

“She’s already ranked third in the country and is in top form.

“Of all of our swimmers—and there are 21 from the region who are at the trials—Becky has one of the best chances and with the relay team having already done enough to qualify she will make it if she finishes in the top six in March.

“Nick has done superbly well to make it to the trials and it’s a reward for all the hard work he’s put in."
