Rotherham Hockey Club: thriving with players of all ages

ROTHERHAM Hockey Club is thriving, with people aged eight to 80 enjoying the game in the summer sunshine.

Its motto “Hockey is a Sport for Life” was evident at a recent weekend when it put out two development teams including boys and girls aged eight-14 years to play against local clubs Chapeltown and Doncaster.

The kids are coached in Ótter" sessions on Sunday mornings by older junior players. Rotherham Robins won two, drew two and lost two while Rotherham Wrens won three, drew one and lost three.

At the other end of the spectrum the club ran a walking hockey session for retired members.

A spokesman said: “While the pace of the game is slower, the ex-players and coaches who took part have not lost their touch and it was impressive to see their enthusiasm for the sport is still there.

“The average age was around 80, which shows that the club caters for everybody.”

Rotherham fields three men's teams, two ladies sides and a development team playing most weekends in the season and caters for boys and girls from U10s level upwards.

Youth training, including Otters, starts again on Sunday mornings from September 3.
