Redfearn sets sights high

NEW boss Neil Redfearn says he eventually wants to deliver Premier League football to Rotherham United.

Speaking at a press conference today to officially unveil his arrival at the club, the former Leeds United chief said he would like to emulate his old club Barnsley and find a route into the top tier.

Redfearn has signed a deal taking him to the end of the 2017/18 season and believes that the club has the potential to take that step.

He said: "It's been proven in the past with teams like Bournemouth and we are no different. We want to be successful and get out of this division as a long-term vision.

"The difference between Rotherham and a lot of other clubs at the moment is that they're upwardly mobile. What has happened on the pitch has been absolutely tremendous, it has really captured the imagination of the people of Rotherham, and it's a club I really want to be part of. The picture looks bright."

Chairman Tony Stewart said it had been a unanimous decision to choose Redfearn as the successor to Steve Evans from a list of up to 70 applicants.

"He's a local lad and his CV looked good," he said of the Yorkshireman. "He's played at a high level, he's captained sides and the time he spent at Leeds shows he's got the potential to be an outstanding manager. As far as the board were concerned, he ticked all the boxes."

Redfearn now has a few days on the training ground to get more acquainted with the players ready for Saturday's trip to Brentford. The Millers go into the game fourth from bottom of the Championship, level on points with their hosts.
