Peugeot EX1's a clean, green, speed machine

PEUGEOT demonstrated the electric pace of its zero-emissions technology with a new lap record on the Nurburgring Nordschleife.

Tuner-technician Stéphane Caillet took to the infamous race track, known as the green hell, in the manufacturer’s EX1 prototype to set a a new lap record for an all-electric car.

EX1 covered the circuit's 12.944 miles, 73 bends and 300 metres of altitude difference, in nine minutes, 1.338 seconds.

Stéphane completed the run at an average speed of 85.951mph.

The EX1 packs a total of 340bhp courtesy of two electric motors and goes without any such weight adding extravagance as a windscreen or roof.

Capable of reaching 62mph in less than three seconds, the EX1 smashed the previous eighth of a mile and quarter-mile records for an electric car in September last year, with times of 7.08.62 and 12.67.54 seconds respectively.

A spokesman for Peugeot said: “This series of records represents a world benchmark for an electric vehicle and testifies to the advanced, high-tech know-how of Peugeot.”
