New football book set to be a winner

TOP football official Chris Eyre has finally seen a labour of love come to fruition with the publication of a new book chronicling a century-and-a-half of the local game.

Chris, from Whiston, has worked on the project since the turn of the century, trawling through the archives alongside his work as a senior member of the Sheffield and Hallamshire FA.

And the result is the 224-page “Football in Sheffield” which really is a must for all fans of the game in South Yorkshire; a nostalgic delve into the history and archives of the game in and around the steel city.

Says Chris: “It’s a project that I started working on for the last 15 years and I’m really pleased with the way it’s tuned out.

“It’s been co-authored with Mick Liversidge. I first bumped into him in 2009 and found out he was working on something similar, so we joined forces and it went from there.

“It centres around Sheffield but there’s plenty of interest for lovers of the game in the Rotherham area.

“We’ve searched high and low for old records, medals and trophies and have unearthed quite a lot such as the first ever Sheffield and District League trophy which ended up in a skip somewhere, was found by an antiques dealer and ended up on the wall at the now demolished Wath St James Squash Club!”

The book is now on sale at £25 but in a special offer for Advertiser readers it is available at £20, including postage and packing, from Chris at 77 Lathe Road, Rotherham, S60 4LL.
