New boss praises Millers

NEW manager Steve Evans saw encouraging signs despite tasting defeat in his first match in charge of Rotherham United.

The Millers shocked League Two promotion chasers Shrewsbury Town with an early goal on Saturday and dominated the first half before the hosts pulled away to win 3-1.

The result maintained the Shrews' unbeaten home league record and lifted them to second place but Evans was satisfied they had been given a stern test.

He said: "It's not many times you go to that stadium and the home crowd are on the verge of booing. They were silent and that was due to quality of our performance in the first half. I don't think Shrewsbury were in the game at all until they equalised right on half time and that gave them a spark.

"If I was a neutral then I'd think that was an unfair scoreline given the first half and the chances we missed in the second half.

"I was disappointed but there's a lot to work with."

Ryan Cresswell scored the Millers' goal, his second in successive games on his comeback to the side.

Rotherham trail the play-offs frame by five points with three games left. Morecambe are the visitors to Don Valley Stadium on Saturday.
