Moorgate Tennis Club recently held a qualifying tournament for a competition which sees the winners going on to regional finals followed by a chance to go to Wimbledon for the National Finals.

Adam Butcher and James Couldwell came out on top In the Men's Doubles and then successfully came through the Yorkshire Area Finals at Nuffield Tennis Centre in Hull last month to book their dream ticket.

In the first round they played a couple from Hull, one a county player, and after a fairly even start they went on to win 6-3 6-1.

After being handed a concession in their second match, Adam and James knew a victory in their final match would see them emerge overall winners.

The pair won the first set 6-2 and the realisation of what they might achieve led to a nervy start in the second set which saw them slip 2-0 down. But after a few words they rediscovered a more positive approach which eventually saw James serve out the set by a 6-2 margin. Adam and James now go forward to the finals at Wimbledon from August 6-12.

The boys’ singles competition at Moorgate saw Max Venables defeat Matei Mare in a close final. It meant Max followed his club colleagues Adam and James to Nuffield and although he did brilliantly to win three out of four matches, he was pipped at the post for the chance to play at Wimbledon.
