ROTHERHAM United surrendered a two-goal lead as they were forced to settle for a point from a frenetic Championship clash with Bristol City.

Leading 2-0 through Izzy Brown an own goal with 16 minutes left, Alan Stubbs men succumbed to the visitors, who did enough throughout the game to take all three points.

With Greg Halford and Dominic Ball shielding a back four that included debutant Dael Fry, the Millers line-up had a more solid look about it on paper.

After Ball’s volley forced an early block from goalkeer Richard O’Donnell, they took the lead on six minutes when Brown siezed on a mix-up between the stopper and defender Aden Flint to run the ball into an empty net.

Rotherham’s goal led a charmed life up to the interval, the visitors firing off 14 shots and hogging possession. Darnell Fisher twice came to the rescue with blocks and the busy Lee Camp excelled to keep out Bobby Reid’s shapshot right on half time.

The second half was equally hectic with chances for both sides before Rotherham made it 2-0 12 minutes in. Brown did well to help work a chance for Halford and although his tame shot was blocked, the ball deflected high into the net off Flint.

The match should have been put to bed when Danny Ward, clean through, sailed one over the bar and City took advantage of that let-off on 74 minutes when a goalmouth scramble ended with Tammy Abraham poking home.

The comeback was complete six minutes later when Bobby Reid pounced to turn in a raking cross at the far post and as City pressed for a winner, there was relief when substitute Jamie Paterson’s shot hit the inside of the post.

It was the second time the Millers had given up a two-goal lead to draw 2-2 this season, with the home opener against Wolves going the same way.
