City goalkeeper David Marshall’s sending-off just before half time for kicking out at Matt Derbyshire, and a resulting penalty by Vadis Odjidja-Ofoe, gave Rotherham the initial advantage but it was soon cancelled out as Farrend Rawson fouled Fabio Da Silva and Peter Whittingham scored from the spot.

It looked like turning into a frustrating afternoon as Steve Evans’ men piled on the pressure in the second half only to meet a wall of blue shirts.

A venomous volley from the dangerous Jonson Clarke-Harris tested substitute goalkeeper Simon Moore and Derbyshire planted a header straight at the stopper from close range.

Pressed back, Cardiff survived a couple of close calls in their goalmouth and were relieved to see Clarke-Harris flash a header a yard wide.
