I won't hide, says Evans

ROTHERHAM United boss Steve Evans has vowed to take the criticism on the chin and fight on to correct the team's rocky run of form.

The manager and players were jeered at the New York Stadium on Saturday after slipping to a third successive defeat, this time at the hands of League Two strugglers Bristol Rovers.

Claude Davis, making his debut, gave away the penalty for the visitors' first goal and was then dismissed just before half time for a second bookable offence. Rovers pulled away to win 3-1, with substitute David Noble scoring the consolation goal.

Evans said it was the lowest he had felt in the last four or five years as a manager but promised he wouldn't be hiding from anyone.

"Of course the boos hurt," he said. "I know what the expectations here are. I've helped create some of them and if you help create something then you have to deliver.

"I won't hide away and buckle. I'll still be in the town, I'll still be on the training ground, I'll still be around and I'll still take questions. I'm not frightened to stand in front of the supporters and I'll still give 100 per cent and if (chairman) Tony Stewart ever thinks that's not the case then I'll be on my bike won't I?"

The Millers chief said individual errors were the main reason for the defeat and felt sorry for the 200 supporters who shifted snow to make sure the match went ahead.

He added: "I'm not going to fault my team for effort and commitment in the second half. Sometimes people can forget you're playing for ten men for more than half the game but we were certainly a long way from being good enough."

The result left the Millers in ninth spot but only two points off third-placed Northampton with a game in hand. Northampton are the visitors to the New York Stadium on Saturday.
