Honours even at Hillsborough

ROTHERHAM United took a point from a scrappy stalemate against Sheffield Wednesday at Hillsborough.

ROTHERHAM United took a point from a scrappy goalless draw against Sheffield Wednesday at Hillsborough.

Clear chances were at a premium in a sometimes poor quality local derby in which defences were on top and both sides lacked quality in the final third.

Rotherham had arguably the best chance when an unmarked Paul Green planted a free header wide from close range in the first half. For Wednesday, left-back Jeremy Helan forced a good stop from Adam Collin in the latter stages and there was a big penalty shout when Kieran Lee went down in a goalmouth scramble.

Chances were few in a pretty even first half. Stevie May, the striker who chose Wednesday over the Millers in August, looked the most likely to create something for them but after Green’s miss,  Ben Pringle might have done better when he was set up by Alex Revell 18 yards out and put a hesitant shot at Keiren Westwood.

The match opened up in the second half with play swinging from end to end. Paul Taylor and Frazer Richardson had half chances but neither team had enough guile to force a goal.

The result leaves both teams in the bottom half of the Championship, Wednesday in 13th place and the Millers three points behind in 19th.
