HERRINGTHORPE Stadium is ready for action again after a much-needed refurbishment.

The venue, which opened in 1960, has undergone its most extensive revamp in years.

New floodlights, upgraded changing rooms, repairs to the track and a new run-up and throws cage are part of the work driven by Rotherham Borough Council.

And for main users Rotherham Harriers Athletics Club, the improvements are particularly welcome.

Club secretary Steve Gaines said: “We are extremely grateful for the investment approved by Rotherham MBC to improve the facilities at Herringthorpe Stadium.

“This significant investment — the first since the stadium was upgraded around 30 years ago — is way beyond anything the club could hope to fund because it equates to around £2,000 capital investment for each of our 250 current members.

“The investment not only means improved facilities for our club members and other stadium users, it also means that the stadium will now comply fully with the necessary standards set by our athletics National Governing body for athletics competition venues.

“As such, this gives us a platform from which to build further on the notable successes that our club, coaches and athletes are currently achieving.

“We look forward to working with RMBC over the next few years to build on this valued step.”

The project, originally costed at £254,000, has taken nearly a year to complete.
