Gavin's Paralympic call-up

ROTHERHAM’S Gavin Walker will make his Paralympic bow this summer after being picked for the Great Britain wheelchair rugby team — and says his immediate aim will be to make his family proud.

The 32-year-old father of two has been confirmed in the 12-man squad to head to Rio this September, having been named vice-captain of the national team last year which won the European Championship.

And he says: “I started playing rugby in 2011 and I can’t believe how much my life has changed since then.

“I never thought I could represent my country in sport, so I am so excited and pleased to have reached this point and I can’t wait to get out to compete in Rio.

“I’d like to thank everyone that has supported me to reach this point, including my amazing family. I really want to make them proud.”

The former firefighter was confined to a wheelchair after breaking his neck when he slipped on wet decking in 2010.
