ROTHERHAM United were dumped out of the EFL Cup by underdogs Morecambe in a nine-goal thriller at the New York Stadium.

Jerry Yates struck twice for the Millers but the League Two visitors prevailed 5-4 after extra time as an at times pedestrian performance was punished by a hat-trick from substitute Jack Dunn.

The omens didn’t look good from the start as a blocked pass from debutant Kelvin Wilson led to Cole Stockton curling the visitors into a lead with only five minutes on the clock.

Rotherham hogged possession for the rest of the half but apart from a thunderous shot against the bar from Jon Taylor, they posed little threat

It was scarcely deserved when captain for the night Greg Halford won and calmly rolled in a 59th minute penalty to even the scores but the visitors restored their lead less than ten minutes later when on-loan Liverpool man Dunn fired in his first of the night on the turn.

Youth product Yates, one of eight changes in the home line-up, marked his home debut by drilling in a second equaliser, and his first competitive senior goal, ten minutes from time.

The comeback was complete shortly after when substitute Anthony Forde darted through and found the net from an acute angle but when Dunn was felled by substitute Richard Wood in stoppage time, he picked himself up to bury the spot kick.

Millers old boy Kevin Ellison, now 37 and on as a sub, scrambled the visitors back in front in the 113th minute and Dunn’s hat-trick effort ensured Yates’ late, late reply was a mere consolation.

The match was watched by Celtic defender Darnell Fisher, who has been linked a move to the NYS.
