Frustrated Millers held to a draw

ROTHERHAM United’s efforts to make up ground in the League Two promotion race were frustrated in a 1-1 draw at Cheltenham this afternoon.

The Millers took the lead on ten minutes through Jason Taylor’s sweet 25-yarder but the home side equalised just past the hour mark when stand-in goalkeeper Jamie Annerson dropped a free-kick under pressure and Andy Gallinagh pounced to score from close range.

The failure to take three points, plus results elsewhere, leaves caretaker manager Andy Liddell’s side four points shy of the play-offs with five games left to play.

Tom Pope, back in the starting line-up after being recalled from his loan spell at Port Vale, had two headers cleared off the line in an entertaining first half.

Matt Green hit the post at the other end and Gallinagh had a header pushed onto the bar by  Annerson, who also excelled to keep out a shot by the home side’s top scorer, Wes Thomas.

After Cheltenham’s equaliser, home keeper Scott Brown twice came to the rescue to keep out goal-bound headers by Nicky Law and Marcus Marshall.

Substitute Liam Henderson was also inches wide with a far-post header as the Millers finished the stronger.
