The Rotherham United midfielder hasn't played since the first match of pre-season because of achilles trouble but a positive scan and follow-up date with a specialist mean he can finally start to put his injury frustration behind.

If all goes well, he could be ready for first-team selection in just over a month.

“It's really good news," manager Matt Taylor said. “The scan was as good as it could be. The specialist was really pleased.

“Jamie needs some gym work, which he's already started. Because he's been in the boot, he's lost a bit of calf and quad muscle.

“He needs probably a week to ten days of building those muscles back up, then he'll be back out on the grass. For the first time in a long time, he's pain-free, which is a great sign.”

The Millers don't expect him to be ready to play immediately after the next international break, which ends on October 20, but have their fingers crossed that he won't be far away by that date.

“He should be back in full training by then,” Taylor said. “That's what we're hoping for. The boot is now off and he's loading that calf and leg. It's a significant moment.”

The 27-year-old, who notoriously hates being sidelined, adds a combative presence to Rotherham's squad and Taylor is an admirer of the Scot's qualities.

“He's an underrated player,” the boss said. “People don't appreciate enough what he gives us. The last eight or games last season, he was my first name on the team sheet.

“It's been a frustrating period of time for him, for me, for everyone. He's well-respected and well-liked at this club. He's the worst one when he's injured. He just loves playing football and running around. He's like a bear with a sore head when he's not involved.”

Another of Rotherham's absentees, centre-half Sean Morrison, is making good progress after suffering a calf injury earlier this month.

“He's on the grass at the end of this week,” Taylor said. “He's a couple of weeks ahead of Jamie.”

The club skipper won't feature in the three matches leading up to the two-week lull in the second-tier programme, his boss confirmed. However, he should be in the frame for the October 20 visit of Ipswich Town.

Meanwhile, young central defender Hamish Douglas, who has been on the first-team bench, has joined Gainsborough Trinity on loan.
