Second Rotherham United game off and full Christmas schedule in jeopardy after more Millers Covid cases

Last Saturday's home match with Derby County was called off when a player had tested positive and others reported symptoms.

A second case was confirmed on Monday and there were several more last night after another round of testing at the club's Roundwood training complex.

The December 29 and January 2 Championship homes fixtures against Barnsley and Cardiff City could also be affected, with Rotherham hoping to make an announcement on those later today.

They are working with the EFL as they monitor the severity of the spread.

The Advertiser understands five players have now returned positive results.

A Millers statement this morning read: "Following a number of further positive cases of Covid-19 confirmed last night within the Rotherham United firs- team squad, we have reluctantly – but with the safety of our players and staff at the forefront of our minds – informed the EFL and our opponents, Middlesbrough, that we will be unable fulfil our Boxing Day fixture.

"The club have, following consultation with the EFL doctors, been left with no choice but to inform the EFL of our decision to rearrange the game.

"We hope to make a decision on future fixtures later today as we continue discussions with the EFL, with whom we will work closely, to ensure the safety of everyone connected with the club."

In line with standard procedure, the EFL will hold an investigation.
