Rotherham United land former multi-million-pound midfielder Sam Clucas

ROTHERHAM United today made a free-agent signing by clinching the signature of Sam Clucas, the ex-Premier-League player who once commanded a transfer fee of £16.5 million.

The midfielder has been without a club since leaving Stoke City at the end of last season and has agreed a deal with the Millers for the rest of the 2023/24 Championship campaign.

It has yet to be revealed if the 32-year-old is eligible for tomorrow's Yorkshire derby at Huddersfield.

“He's a talented player who brings a wealth of experience,” said manager Matt Taylor. “He's been there and done it at this level and at the level above. He's been training us for the last week or so so we've had eyes on him for a period of time. He's impressed us with various parts of his game, none more so than his intelligence.”

Clucas started his career at Lincoln City and went on to Mansfield Town and Chesterfield before a 2016 £1.3m switch to Hull City.

He played in the Premier League for the Tigers and earned a £16.5 move to another top-flight side, Swansea City, in 2017. The last five years have been spent with the Potters who paid the Swans £6m for his services.

Taylor sees him having a similar effect on one flank for Rotherham to that of summer arrival Cafu on the other.

“Sam can play inside the pitch and on the outside,” the boss said. “He'll add set-piece quality with his left-footed delivery. ‘Caf’ has improved our delivery from the right and we needed a set-piece -aker on the left in the absence of (injured) Shane Ferguson.”

Clucas, the 14th recruit since last term, has had recent injury issues. After playing 46 times in 2020/21, he managed only 26 outings in the following season and that figure dropped to 14 in his final year at the bet365 Stadium.

“We know we've got to manage him wisely,” said Taylor. “But this is a player who was sold for £16.5m and has played in the Premier League. His age is his age and his injury record is what it is. I'm still pleased we've got him.”

“He is someone who complements what we've got already," Taylor said. "We've got a lot of pace, a lot of power, a bit of rawness. He's brings control.”
