ROTHERHAM United surrendered a two-goal lead as they were forced to settle for a point against ten-man Wolverhampton Wanderers in an entertaining Championship opener at the New York Stadium.

Leading 2-0 after 20 minutes through Danny Ward and new signing Will Vaulks, they were pegged back to 2-2 despite the visitors having Dominic Iorfa sent pff early in the second half.

Playing the passing game demanded by manager Alan Stubbs and not giving their opponents a minute’s peace, the Millers bossed most of the first half with a starting line-up containing four debutants in Vaulks, Anthony Forde, Jake Forster-Caskey and record signing Jon Taylor.

Ward headed in Forde’s corner to set them on their way and the impressive Vaulks had the short-sleeved home fans on their feet once again with a rasping effort from distance to double the advantage with just 20 minutes gone.

Lee Camp had been called into serious action just once when George Saville seized on a defensive lapse to round the stopper and roll in from an angle five minutes before the break.

The visitors’ comeback chances suffered a blow soon after half time when Iorfa was dismissed for impeding Taylor who was clean through.

They took the blow on the chin and levelled when Jon Dadi Bodvarsson finished off a move down the right with an angled shot high past Camp on 65 minutes.

Although Wolves finished the stronger, Rotherham’s efforts on the day were appreciated by the supporters in what was a decent start for Stubbs.
